Victorian Flat Restoration, Glasgow
This unusual Victorian property in Glasgow was severely neglected, and in very poor condition prior to our involvement. Much of its original character had been lost - stripped out and shoddily re-fitted in the 1980s, as part of a conversion into student accommodation. We scheduled intensive fabric repairs, including structural, stonework and window restorations, before beginning a transformative re-design.
Our initial philosophy was to retain and restore as much original fabric as possible, while stripping back the layers of inappropriate additions. To this, we added a number of salvaged elements, such as a period cast iron fireplace and Victorian half-glazed doors. Handmade, double glazed sash and case windows were installed where originals had been removed. Tongue and groove panelling was added to utilitarian areas, and the original Baltic pine floor boards were painstakingly cleaned and finished with dark pigmented natural wax. The colour palette was selected to give rooms a varied, but complementary range of characters, manipulating the generous natural light.
