Terraced Housing, Kirkintilloch
Planning and Conservation Area consent applications submitted 2018.
A terrace of five houses is proposed on the site of a disused school dining hall built in the 1960s. The site in its present state, like the area immediately surrounding, has a fragmented and incoherent street condition. Our proposal creates an ordered, front facing terrace which re-establishes a positive urban edge.
The architectural language gives individual expression to each dwelling, while retaining a sense of the composed object. A deep chimney breast emphasises this reading of the building as a whole, giving weight and a groundedness to the corner. Through scale, proportion and a sculptural language the terrace borrows characteristics from traditional weaver’s cottages and rows of colony flats that are the predominant types in the wider Kirkintilloch Central conservation area.
Principal rooms are positioned at first floor level, looking onto an existing green. Each unit has two bedrooms, both of which have a small external balcony or roof terrace on the garden facing south facade. Garages are contained within the ground storey, providing parking and bicycle storage on what is a constrained and challenging site.
