Planning Granted: House on a Hillside

Our proposals for a new house in the Scottish Highlands have been granted planning approval. The site lies on a steeply sloping hillside, with fantastic elevated views over Loch Broom, and the mountains beyond. The building is arranged as two offset volumes, gently turned outward to hug the hillside and open up to the landscape.

Seen from the loch, the form of the building appears conventional and incorporates vernacular elements such as lime-washed masonry walls, low eaves, and expressed chimneys. On approach, tall mono-pitched roof forms are revealed, ‘leaning’ back towards the slope. High level windows reach up to scoop direct sunlight into the living spaces. Smaller apertures provide intimate views of the surrounding sloped and terraced gardens.
