Iorram

-

Iorram is a small new-build cottage in the Scottish Highlands. Situated within the Plockton Conservation Area, the house occupies a tight triangular plot, with the building orientated to address a single-track lane. Taking advantage of this easterly aspect, a large opening, tucked under the eaves, looks out over the harbour to the rocky crags across the bay. The steep, blade-like roof is contrasted against a muscular, lime-harled volume, with an offset chimney on the southerly gable.

The project was an opportunity for us to hone an approach to craft, and to work in a direct and simple way with local timber. We wanted to make a building that’s spare, and economic in its bones, but rich in material character. Just four apertures puncture the monolithic clay block walls, each serving a particular purpose. This is an environment in which turning inward, and sheltering behind deep walls, and a big roof, is as important as connecting to views and the wider landscape.

Forming the first stage of a sensitive infill project developed by the studio, Iorram is our own self-build project, and can be booked for short stays here.
